Apple, Google Speed Ahead in Safer Design of Vehicle Infotainment Technology Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto are less distracting to drivers when compared to built-in vehicle infotainment systems designed by automakers, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. AAA is encouraged by these findings, as they indicate that popular infotainment systems can be designed in a way that is less distracting. Distracted driving is responsible for more than 390,000 injuries and 3,500 deaths every year.

Motorists Digging Deeper to Fuel Up North Dakota consumers are spending $68 more a month to fill-up their vehicle gas tanks compared to last summer. With the regular gasoline average through today running about 12 percent higher than one year ago, North Dakotans are spending, on average, 7.5 percent of annual income on gas, up from 6.1 percent in 2017. Tread Lightly: Worn Tires Put Drivers at Risk Afternoon downpours can spell disaster for motorists as worn tires increase stopping distance. New research from AAA reveals that driving on relatively worn tires at highway speeds in wet conditions can increase average stopping distances by a staggering 43 percent when compared to new tires. The increased stopping distance -- an average of 87 feet -- is more than the length of a semi-trailer truck. Read more...

Teen-Driver Involved Crashes Kill 10 People a Day During 100 Deadliest Days As school dismiss for the summer, AAA is stressing the importance of preparing and educating inexperienced teen drivers for some of the most dangerous driving days of the year. More than 1,050 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver in 2016 during the 100 Deadliest Days, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That is an average of 10 people per day – a 14 percent increase compared to the rest of the year, according to data analyzed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

American Trust in Autonomous Vehicles Slips Following high-profile incidents involving autonomous vehicle technologies, a new report from AAA’s multi-year tracking study indicates consumer trust in these vehicles has quickly eroded. Double Digits Means Double Trouble for Vehicle Breakdowns The average age of vehicles on the road in the United States is leaving a majority of drivers at a higher-than-average risk for a breakdown. A new analysis of AAA roadside data shows that vehicles that have reached double-digits in age (10 years and older) are twice as likely to end up stranded on the side of the road compared to newer vehicles.
