Cold Temperatures Cut Electric Vehicle Range Nearly in Half
As freezing temperatures plague  much of the country, electric vehicle owners may experience a decrease in driving range, compounded by the use of the vehicle’s interior climate control. New research from AAA reveals that when the mercury dips to 20°F and the HVAC system is used to heat the inside of the vehicle, the average driving range is decreased by 41 percent. This means for every 100 miles of combined urban/highway driving, the range at 20°F would be reduced to 59 miles. Read more...

AAA Illuminates Dangers of Driving with Cloudy Headlights New research from AAA reveals that clouded or yellowed headlights generate only 20 percent of the amount of light that new headlights do, leading to dangerous nighttime driving conditions. AAA urges drivers to check their headlights for signs of deterioration and invest in new headlights or, at a minimum, a low-cost service to boost the safety of driving after dark. Read more...

AAA Forecasts Busiest Thanksgiving Travel Period Since 2005 AAA projects 54.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving, a 4.8 percent increase over last year. The 2018 holiday weekend will see the highest Thanksgiving travel volume in more than a dozen years (since 2005), with 2.5 million more people taking to the nation’s roads, skies, rails and waterways compared with last year. Read more...

New Vehicle Technologies Double Repair Bills for Minor Collisions Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have become a major concern for American motorists who have been involved in a minor collision. According to new research from AAA, advanced systems such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and others, can cost twice as much to repair following a collision due to expensive sensors and their calibration requirements. The research showed even minor collisions that cause damage to this technology located behind windshields, bumpers and door mirrors can add up to $3,000 in extra repair costs. Read more...

Teens Driving with Teens Increases Risk for Everyone on the Road Teen drivers increase the risk of a deadly crash for everyone on the roadway, especially if they bring teen passengers along for the ride. New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that in 2016, when a teen driver had only teen passengers in their vehicle, the fatality rate for all people involved in a crash increased 51 percent. In contrast, when older passengers (35 or older) rode with a teen driver, overall fatality rates in crashes decreased eight percent. Read more...

AAA: Drivers Rely Too Heavily on New Vehicle Safety Technologies While advanced driver assistance systems are becoming commonplace in new vehicles, many consumers are unaware of the limitations of the systems, putting themselves and others at risk. According to a new study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers are recognizing the value in having vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), like blind spot monitoring systems, forward collision warning and lane keeping assist. However, while many of these technologies are rapidly being offered as standard, many drivers are unaware of the safety limitations of the systems in their vehicles.
